The term 'sciatica' (pain radiating into the buttock and down the leg) is one we have become familiar with and one that is attached to symptoms (pain, pins and needles, numbness). Sciatica can be present in one or both legs. It may be that you have been given this diagnosis from your General Practitioner or possibly reviewed your symptoms on Google.
Sciatica it is often attributed to common non-specific low back pain and is regularly seen by chiropractors. It can be effectively treated through chiropractic treatment.
There may be many reasons for your symptoms and these can be diagnosed through the initial chiropractic physical examination. It may be that you have caused an irritation in one of the sacroiliac joints of the pelvis; or in a pair of small capsule joints on each of the vertebra - known as facet joints.
An irritation of either of these joints will cause inflammation and pain. Associated muscle spasm around the involved area can also cause a radiation of symptoms into the legs.
Chiropractic treatment is usually painless unless the area is acutely inflamed following injury. If this is the case, an appropriate alternative treatment to manipulation can be given which will help the injury to recover. It is quite normal to hear a clicking or popping noise when your joints are being manipulated and this is painless and does not damage the joint.
Some patients may experience a mild reaction to treatment such as a temporary ache or pain after the spine or a specific joint has been manipulated and this will be fully explained during the first treatment. This response to treatment will clear after 12-24 hrs following treatment and can be helped with an intermittent application of cold pack to the involved area.
It is important to me that we discuss any concerns that you may have about any aspects of treatment so that I can explain the process of treatment and the expected outcome.
